From the 2002 academic year, Japanese compulsory education system has been changed.
It became the five-day week basis. So they don't have to go to school on Saturday any more.

Yutori education (ゆとり教育 yutori-kyōiku) is a Japanese education policy which reduces the hours and the content of the curriculum in primary education. In recent years, the mass media in Japan have used this phrase to criticize drops in scholastic ability.  (by WikiPedia - Yutori education)

Some parents concern about decline in their achievements.
Because Japan is still the competition society.
Some parents let their kids go to cram schools to enter better schools in the future.

However, I think the competition society has ended up.
Do you know why?
Now it is in still in a depression so even though people who have high educational backgrounds, they are still looking for jobs.

I think the five days week basis is the good system.
What should they do on Saturdays?
If I were their parent,  I will let them think themselves what they should do in the future.
But! No TV games or TV.
